Drypoint & Chine-collé
In this hands-on workshop, you will learn the basics of Drypoint and Chine-collé printmaking. You’ll discover how to create detailed, textured prints using repurposed Tetra Pak packaging and PET-G plates—an eco-friendly, accessible, and cost-effective approach to intaglio printmaking.
You will explore how to incise your own image into Tetra Pak or PET-G plates using simple tools. Once your plate is ready, you’ll move on to inking and printing, applying the drypoint intaglio technique step by step. This process is both engaging and easy to adapt, whether you are new to printmaking or looking to build on existing skills.
The workshop also introduces Chine-collé, a traditional method used to add color, texture, and dimension to prints. You will learn how to layer thin papers—such as tissue, newspaper, or handmade paper—onto your main printmaking paper. This technique allows you to enhance your imagery while preserving fine details, adding richness and depth to your final composition.
Throughout the workshop, you will gain practical skills in reusing everyday materials for printmaking. You’ll also learn key principles of composition, layering, and balance by combining drypoint and Chine-collé techniques. To deepen your understanding, we will touch on the history of drypoint printmaking—from its origins with metal plates to today’s more sustainable materials.
All essential materials are provided. Participants are encouraged to bring:
A notebook or sketchbook
Any printmaking inks you’d like to experiment with
Tetra Pak packaging for creating your own plates
Tissue paper, newspaper, or collage papers for Chine-collé
We will discuss additional material options during the first class.
This workshop is ideal for beginners and for artists interested in expanding their printmaking practice using sustainable and accessible techniques.
These final prints will make beautiful keepsakes for yourself or thoughtful gifts for someone special.
